The 13 Actions to Becoming a Certified Winning Community
Becoming a Certified Winning Community not only requires commitment and participation, it requires action. The 13 action items below outline the process of becoming a Certified Winning Community, based on a 100-point system.
1. Form Steering Committee —- The community forms a separate steering committee and holds its first meeting to coordinate the planning project (5 points)
2. Coordinate First Community Meeting — The steering committee develops people and organization lists and letters of invitation for first community meeting (2 points)
3. Media and Public Announcements — The team distributes news release and holds a news conference announcing the community planning project (3 points)
4. First Community Planning Meeting — The community provides input to develop Assets, Challenges and Opportunities and identify Goal Areas of Opportunity (5 points)
5. Establish Goal Areas of Opportunity —- The group reviews and determines Goal Areas of Opportunity for community based on surveys and responses (5 points)
6. Complete Interviews/Focus groups —- Winning Communities interviews and/or holds focus groups with several key community leaders for additional insight for the community's plan (5 points)
7. Second Community Meeting — During this creative planning session, the community identifies needs within each goal area and sets measurable objectives for each goal area (10 points)
8. Hold Community Retreat — Winning Communities facilitates a critical planning session to develop working vision, mission, goals and objectives (15 points)
9. Establish Goal Area Teams — The group identifies specific action items for each goal area, resources needed, naming teams for implementation and a timetable for accomplishment (10 points)
10. Finalize Action Plan and Declare Commitment — The Steering Committee finalizes the Community Action Plan after receiving reports from all Action Teams and signs the Declaration of Commitment (10 points)
11. Action Teams Establish One Attainable Objective — Action Teams from each goal area choose one objective for which progress can start immediately and show progress within 60 days (5 points)
12. Action Plan Progress Team Established — A Winning Communities Oversight Committee is formed to coordinate and ensure the progress of the Vision/Action Plan (10 points)
13. Winning Communities Committee Meets — This Action Plan Progress Team meets no later than 60 days after the Vision/Action Plan is announced to receive progress reports on the various objectives from each Goal Area Team (15 points)
Total: 100 points — The Public Announcement of the Certified Winning Community™ Plaque and Ceremony follows the community's successful completion of all 100 points listed above.
